By Trevor Thomas Williams
The award-winning Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof is the story of Tevye, an impoverished milkman living in the town of Anatevka. Tevye must decide between tradition and family as his three strong-willed daughters defy tradition in favor of marrying for love.
Michael Carrasco as Tevye is incredibly charming and easy to watch. He masterfully navigates Tevye’s long-winded soliloquies, leaving the audience hanging on his every word. Opposite Carrasco is Allison Books as Golde. Books commands the stage with her expert line delivery and gorgeous vocals. Aubrey Rose Jackson as Tzeitel immediately steals the show in the second number “Matchmaker”, drawing big laughs from the audience while impressing with her vocal talent. Sierra Livermore as Hodel is an absolute joy to watch, her talents especially showcased in “Far From the Home I Love”. She tugs on the audience’s heartstrings and impresses with her clear vocals. Savannah Carrasco as Chava draws attention every time she is on stage, and her heart-wrenching performance solidifies her as one of the strongest actors in this incredibly talented cast. Joshua Jones as Motel is quirky, energetic, and loveable, make sure you don’t look away for one second or you will surely miss one of his hilarious and committed physical choices. Kyson Taylor as Perchik wins the audience over within his first 30 seconds on stage. Taylor delivers an endearing performance and has incredible chemistry with Livermore. The ensemble cast is incredibly talented, with beautiful singing and impressive dancing.
Standout performances include Krystal Bigler as Yente, who makes the most of her limited stage time with expert comedic timing and a remarkable voice. Bigler had me laughing so hard I was worried I was disturbing the rest of the audience members. Christopher d’Argy as Lazar Wolfe, who beautifully harmonizes with Carrasco during “To Life”. And Adrienne Hansen as Fruma-Sara, bringing the character to life and making “The Dream” the best number in the entire production– I wish I could go every night and watch her delightfully spooky performance.
Choreography by Tyne Valgardson Crockett and Emerson Earnshaw is fast-paced and electric, making every dance number a rousing success. Music Direction by Kristi Thomas Frei is incredibly impressive, perfectly balancing the sound of this talented ensemble. Costume Designers Amy Handy and Brooke Holahan expertly outfit the cast in beautiful costumes, accurately portraying the time period. Hair and Makeup by Hannah Anderson and Nicole Scoubes is meticulous and impressive, perfectly complimenting the beautiful costumes. Set Design by Crystal Pyne is gorgeous and clever, tying the show together to solidify the cohesive vision of Director Colleen Carrasco. C. Carrasco expertly helms this incredible team, proving that she has an incredible understanding of the text, making every scene stunning and engaging.
