As a Front Row Reviewers reviewer, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend Wasatch Ballet Conservatory‘s spring performance of their show, Bon Voyage, at the Ashton Auditorium in the Orem Public Library. With ages 10 through 18, this group of young artists came well prepared with a variety of dance styles designed to have something to interest everyone. Throughout the performance, we were able to experience ballet, contemporary, jazz, and hip hop dance styles. The theme of this evening’s performance, Bon Voyage, was reflected in the wide variety of performances that felt like you were visiting places both near and far.
During this evening performance, we had superb solo performances from seniors Sabrina Romero and Carolina Emig. Emig was brilliant and graceful. Her jazz performance utilized the stage space well and she easily commanded the attention of the audience. Ramero had several moments in the spotlight. Her contemporary dance was captivating, being exceptionally graceful and conveying a powerful story through dance. More impressive was her ballet. She accomplished several difficult moves with an ease that shows her dedication to this art.
In addition to these two fantastic dancers, the rest of the company was stunning as well. Each of the performances (around 20 in all) was well choreographed, the music and the dance moves working in complete harmony. The pacing of the program kept the audience interested and excited to see what would come next. The younger dancers were exceptionally talented, en pointe, and very graceful as well. Individual performances such as “Northern Lights” and “The Greatest Showman” were exceptional and impossible to look away from.
The range of the performances was equally impressive. There were several pieces that were very dramatic followed by graceful flowing ballet. A few had distinctly whimsical elements and were a joy to watch. Also exceptionally enjoyable were the costumes. Each performance was cleverly crafted to tell a story between the dance styles, outfits, and music.
I was able to attend this free one-time event, but the good news is the full performance is playing at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo on March 25, 2023. Don’t miss it!
