CenterPoint Legacy Theatre in Centerville, Utah is a family friendly community theatre that always produces productions of very high caliber and quality. Their current production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is magnificent. Proof that I was so pulled in by this show– I did not touch my concessions snack during the show. While I have seen so many variations of this show, and even been in it, this production hands down takes the cake. Shelby Ferrin blew this production out of the water; you definitely will not want to miss CPT’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Joseph begins in a children’s museum where a T-Rex, the Liberty Bell, and Joseph (Matt Taylor/ Derek Marsden) are standing in a case. The Narrator (Mckenna Kay Jensen/Angie Call/Jessica Wadley) gives one of the kiddos the coat of many colors and the chosen kid sets it in Joseph’s hand. Suddenly, Joseph comes alive. The child performers in this production make everything come together in the most perfect way. Every child has a role: playing the instruments in the back during “One More Angel in Heaven” or being the guards at Joseph’s prison cell.
Father Jacob (Jason Wadsworth/Nelden Maxfield) learns of Joseph’s untimely demise, his sons tell him their brother has passed on after a wrestle with a goat. Wadsworth’s fake crying is so dramatically spectacular, a perfect add on to “Those Canaan Days”. Simeon (David Macmillan/Thad Weiland) uses a fantastic foreign accent during the same song, a perfect bit, especially when they raise their berets in solidarity. Throughout the entire show, the Narrator hands the children the props to use onstage to give to the actors onstage, just like a museum guide would do at an interactive museum. This is a delightful twist to a show that can often seem redundant.
Pharoah (Daylen Bills/Jordon LeBaron) uses the most accurate Elvis voice impression I have ever heard. He is so energetic and really pulls the audience in by his interactive movements. The Pharaoh/King of Rock-n-Roll in Centerville!
Director Ferrin has honed his excellent cast to make this production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat truly excellent. From comedic moments in scene changes, to the entire show being an interactive museum where they learn by being the characters, it is breathtakingly amazing.
Choreographer Sunny Simkins brilliantly adds an extra level to this show by having the classic Pharaoh songs like “Stone the Crows” as 60’s dancing mixed with some modern aspects. I loved her line dance in “One More Angel in Heaven.” Yee-haw! Music Director Arianne Hellewell has Joseph’s nefarious brothers voices blend so well. When Joseph sings with these players, I wish I had a cast recording so I could listen to them over and over again.
Set Designer Truxton Moulton along with Scenic Charge Artists Cynthia Klumpp and Janae Klumpp Gib all work together to create a wonderful platform for the show to come together fully. I was completely convinced I was in a Children’s Interactive Museum. Nicely done. Sound Designer Derek Walden keeps the music coming in this fun-filled musical. I especially enjoyed his museum announcements that play before the show and during intermission.
Costumer Stephanie Bruckman has done a phenomenal job with costumes, and this is a costume heavy show. For example, when Pharaoh first arrives on the scene after getting Joseph out of jail, he slips on sparkly dark blue sneakers. Spunky yet classy. Bruckman dresses Potiphar (Wadsworth/Maxfield) and his servants in dark green to symbolize greed and money, while she has Pharaoh and his servants in dark purple to symbolize royalty.
