Take out your tiara, it’s Princess Time with Cobb&Co. at the Angelus Theatre in Spanish Fork, Utah! This original fairy tale mystery comedy by Ruthie Cobb Higley is full of fun for the whole family. The story begins with the unexpected arrival of Paige, the intrepid and pun-prone maidservant, at a strange, cursed castle tower where a group of quirky Princesses reside. Paige tries to discover how to break the curse over the castle but is constantly interrupted by a cacophony of pleasantly disordered chaos from the different princesses’ behaviors and by the strange advice of a mysterious voice. But it isn’t long before we suspect that Paige has secrets of her own.
This fun-loving, playful play was written and directed to highlight the cast’s improv and comedy and to let the side-splitting ridiculous take center stage. Director Justin Stockett does an excellent job nurturing the natural talent of the cast and interpreting the inherent comedy of the script to its full effect. And the work of the rest of the “co.” in Cobb&Co. is no less impressive. Erin Cobb’s costume design surrounds each princess in sparkly—or sleepy—glory, and the rich and cozy library designed by Ruthie Cobb Higley and painted by Amanda Wilson is complete with a couple stylish suits of armor on fashion mannequins, which is probably my favorite touch. The surprise swordfight in the play is expertly choreographed by Jade Higley to be impressive without being scary, and the lighting perfectly emphasizes dramatic moments—whether it be a plot reveal or a particularly poor pun.
The princesses are a delight, and each actress takes it to a ten with her signature behavior. Ary’s kleptomania steals the show, and I loved Jenna Rhodes’s determination and sass. Hannah Hacking is Autumn, who compulsively completes every action five times. Her consistency is impressive and so fun to watch. The calm, collected, and narcoleptic Fiona (Amanda Gould) is the main voice of reason, even when she’s not the one speaking. She has great timing and command. The flighty, bird-loving Odessa is charmingly brought to life by Chelsea Tramell, who fully embodies the childlike wonder of her character. Tiffany Ellis is the imaginative and illusive Cindy who steps in to save the day with some impressive sword fighting skills. She is shy but genuine in the most heart-warming way. Rachelle Carroll brought bravado to Bella’s anger management issues and brilliantly crafted a likable, hilarious character between feisty fits. Her reaction to the fate of a dearly loved pillow was a performing highlight of the show. Some of the best moments of the show come from watching the princesses interact with each other, either in heightened chaos or surprisingly tender moments, and the genuine royal camaraderie adds to the joy of the show.
The commanding Matron (Lisa King) will have you “yes ma’am”ing along with Paige, and her opening narration sets the stage well. Stephanie Featherstone elicits both laughs and empathy with her great performance of the hysterical Hattie. Sam Leckie makes a great Mysterious Voice and does a good job with her secret reveal at the end of the play. The punny protagonist, Paige, is brought to life by Katelyn Johnson, whose comedic timing and flawless delivery consistently leave the audience in stitches. Johnson’s physical comedy rivals that of her one-liners, making for an endlessly funny character that is still real enough to root for.
