The Foreigner put on by Spanish Fork Community Theater in Spanish Fork is a two-act comedy by Larry Shue. It is an award-winning play that will make you laugh out loud. It first premiered in 1984 and is about a man named Charlie Baker (Andy Hunsaker). Baker is so shy that he doesn’t want to talk, so his friend Sergeant “Froggy” LeSueur (Mike Maurin) tells everyone that he doesn’t speak English. As the play unfolds, Charlie overhears things he shouldn’t and finds himself immensely enjoying being a foreigner. The Foreigner is the funniest play I have ever seen, and you don’t want to miss it.
Hunsakeras Charlie Baker does a spectacular job using facial expressions and voices to make his character all the more clear. Ben Ellis is the hilarious and easily spotted villain Owen Musser who does a good job using his tone of voice, interacting rudely, and swaggering around the stage. He is much funnier than I expected a villain to be. Another villain is wonderfully portrayed by Josh Hopkin as the sneaky and intelligent David Marshall Lee. He uses a sincere tone of voice, fakes patience, and the fact that he is a reverend shows the convincing and subtle trickery of his character. Erika Poulsen as his indignant fiancé uses her talent to portray her injury and rejection.
And the other actors are no less wonderful. Arlene Mcgregor reprises her role as the eccentric Betty Meeks is perfection, showing her awe and excitement by The Foreigner. Betty’s friend “Froggy” LeSueur is remarkably portrayed by Maurin, who speaks authoritatively while the quiet and confused Ellard Simms (Corbin Jensen) is a natural with his nervous attitude, his soft-spoken voice, and timid walk.

The way that everything talented Director Kara Poulsen fits together the fun and devious plot points, The Foreigner flows naturally. I was impressed by how Spanish Fork High School Tech Students created the set, a realistic cabin. I thought that it was cool howLighting and Sound Director Carter Lee creates suspense in Scene One, you can hear thunder and see flashes of lightning in the window of the cabin. It makes the play all the more realistic. The props do not fill up the space in such a way that gives the cabin a cozy but uncluttered look, thanks to Prop Master Brian Gunyan. There is so much detail, and it all fits together to make a realistic scene thanks to Jan Hunsaker’s technical direction.
The Foreigner by Spanish Fork Community Theater is a fantastically funny play that went by quickly and had me laughing from the start. There is a scene with the KKK that may upset some patrons, but it is tasteful and hilarious and essential to the plot. Bring your tweens and up to The Foreigner and prepare to laugh throughout the entire production.
