The Tempest by William Shakespeare, adapted and directed by Cleveland McKay Nicholl, with original music and lyrics by McKell Peterson opens this weekend at the Rock Canyon Trailhead Amphitheatre. McKay Nicholl’s conception of The Tempest is set in a tavern on a stormy night.  It is a free adaptation of characters who are bound together against the elements and tell an elaborate sea-faring tale (one of Shakespeare’s best) of magic, and intrigue, revenge, and forgiveness.  The modern characters tell the tale to a young girl as the magical night unfolds.  Cast includes Benjamin J. Hendersen as Prospero, appearing courtesy of Actor’s Equity Association, and a stellar cast including Sydney Swalberg,  Whitney Call Peterson, Jordan Briggs, Jon Liddiard, Geof Means, Daniel Fenton Anderson, Jasmine Fulmer, Jennsen Henderson, and Anton Moss. Scenic design by Janice Chan, Costumes by Maryanne Hill, and Lighting by Tawnie Robinson

The Diaries of Romeo and Juliet adapted and directed by Kathy Curtiss from the William Shakespeare play.

The Diaries of Romeo and Juliet is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers, faithful to the text in a 90-minute shortened version, that features monologues with a “dark comedy” twist from the major characters speaking about current issues that are of social concern for us now.  It’s a profound step into Renaissance Now’s goals to make Shakespeare classics relevant. There are creative leaps with the characters to serve that end:  Officer Lawrence is a cop instead of a friar, there are single parents who speak out about how it is to raise teens in our time, and, of course, recognizably modern teenagers, seeking identity and to find their hearts.  Sword fighting throughout.  The cast features Logan Murphy and Maddie Smith as Romeo and Juliet, with Adam Argyle as fight director and Lord Capulet, and Alice Ellsworth, Josh Needles, Jacob Thomasen, Colie Lemon, Aspen Thompsen (Juliet Aug 17-19), Skylar Lees, and Riki Squire.  Designers include Janice Chan and Tawnie Robinson.  Stage Manager: KD Olsen.

The Diaries of Romeo and Juliet plays at the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival, The Gateway Mall, Aug 7-8, 2021, 131 Rio Grande St,. Salt Lake City, Utah 84101
