Unstable Connections, playing a little over a half-hour during the new and different online version of the Great Salt Lake Fringe 2020, is a delicious look at virtual speed-dating. Though I’m very married, it was fun for me to see the good, bad, and ugly of what it must be like to speed date online.

Sophie (Emily Henwood) meets a variety of men who seem unprepared to actually date. We have Stephen (“With a P-H) who is–boring. He is followed by Timothy, whose mother is coaching him from the sidelines in a raspy voice, and with great hilarity. We see Timothy twice. Nick, armed with a store-bought teddy bear (all daters were supposed to bring an object), and a strange affect that made me slightly creeped out, also came onscreen several times. He also calls Sophie a whore, which is the only swear in the show. One man gets on and just swipes his phone over and over.

And then there’s Thomas. Thomas is kind, honest, funny. As soon as he hits the screen, we know he’s The One. He shares about his strange encounters, his unusual connections, and Sophie shares hers.

What I like about Unstable Connections is it seems very authentic. The actors are all very natural and in character, and to me, it felt like I was a part of this, even though I was on the sidelines. I wanted to tell Sophie, “Snap up Thomas! He’s awesome!” I will admit, though, I was also anticipating that he may just be weird. I will leave you to find out for yourself what happens in this online dating saga.
