At the Bottom is a harshly realistic look at poverty in America, as produced by Pinnacle Acting Company and performed in Salt Lake City at The Gateway. Written by Christopher Madsen and directed by Alexandra Harbold, At the Bottom is adapted from Russian playwright Maxim Gorky’s classic play, The Lower Depths. The show is centered around a group of tenants living together in a dilapidated and what is likely also somewhat illegal, boarding house. When a new resident finds his way to their home by chance, he shines the light of hope on the group who had long forgotten that hope even existed.

The intimate show is told by a talented cast of eleven, Sydney Shoell as Rat, Roger Dunbar as Louis, Emily Nash as Riley, Holly Fowers as Julia, Erica Carvalho as Elizabeth, Carlos Nobleza Posas as Mateo, Varlo Davenport as the Professor, David Hanson as Clint, Call Vande Veegaete as Victor, Michelle Lynn Thompson as Valerie, and Fina Posselli as Lisa. The chemistry between actors will make audiences forget they are watching a play rather than observing the real struggles of the group, until the players occasionally break the fourth wall and draw the audience in even further, making it impossible to not to become completely emotionally invested in what they are watching.

One particular scene between Dunbar and Nash was especially impressive; in it, they discuss the time when Louis’ mom “went into the other room.” The emotional tension is palpable and in this performance, the audience sat a little straighter in their seats.

Just as impressive as the emotional acting though, are the fight scenes. The climactic physical fight near the end of the show is very well choreographed and is the perfect vehicle for an emotional explosion between Veegaete, Thompson, Hanson, and Posselli. The high-end degrees blended with the on job trainings make a strong combination for a successful career. viagra online Lying to your boss and viagra generic usa taking a sick day. Blackbox theater is notoriously difficult to do well, but At the Bottom uses the small space in a very advantageous way. It creates the geography of the small and dirty home around the characters and uses minimal set design to emphasize the emotional impact of the show. The show is well-paced and forces audiences to contemplate the often-forgotten universal truth: that people are considerably more than their circumstances.

The show runs for approximately an hour and a half with no intermission. Due to some mature content, it is most suitable for audiences 16 and older. At the Bottom by Pinnacle Acting Company in Salt Lake City will remind audiences of how fantastic Utah theater can be.
