Beverly’s Terrace Plaza Playhouse in Washington Terrace is here to charm audiences with their production of Oliver!. This Lionel Bart musical is based on the Charles Dickens Novel Oliver Twist and is directed by W. Derek and Breanne Hendricks, produced by Jacci Olsen Florence, choreographed by Ginny Spencer, Jamie Talbot, and Alyn Bone.

The show follows the plot of the young orphan Oliver (Declan McAlhany) as he makes hi way through the unforgiving streets of London and as his young life is continually upended. He is taken in by a rough-and-tumble bunch of pickpockets and their eccentric leader, Fagin (Nick Cash). The story is that of a series of unfortunate events, told in a way that is somehow still delightful and engaging for audience members young and old.

McAlhany has a large burden to bear as the titular character, but he plays the role with the color and enthusiasm of a more seasoned actor. It’s a fun experience to watch his character grow throughout the story and how he connects with the other actors.

Katie Mayer as Nancy has some poignant emotional moments, such as in “As Long As He Needs Me”, exploring the complexities of love in an abusive relationship. Jack Whitby as the Artful Dodger is a charming ring leader and charismatic bright spot in the show. Tyler O’Bagy, Bill Sikes, does an outstanding job at making Bill an easily hateable character. Cash’s portrayal of Fagin is endearing and intriguing to audience members.

The cast is quite large, but it is thrilling to see how each ensemble member develops their own character and puts so much life into the show. Sam Cash in particular is an outstanding ensemble member and pickpocket. It is evident that this production is a labor of love for each cast member. A particularly enjoyable ensemble number is “Who Will Buy?” as it provides great standout moments for several of the chorus members, who get to demonstrate just how talented of a cast they are. The band of young pickpockets are darling are outstanding ensemble members and the cast has good chemistry together. A particularly enjoyable ensemble number is “Who Will Buy?”, as it provides great standout moments for several of the chorus members, who get to demonstrate just how talented of they are.

Special attention should be given to the technical team of this production: lighting design by Miland Palmer and Mark Ellis, costuming by Becky Montgomery, Jim Tatton, and Stephanie Petersen, and set design by W. Derek Hendricks. The show is beautiful to look at and utilizes the unique stage in a way that creates an immersive experience for the audience, as well as gives the actors a vast and functional playground for their characters.

Oliver! presented by Beverly’s Terrace Plaza Playhouse is a great show for families of any age to experience, especially for anyone with a soft spot for vibrant ensembles and beautiful set designs. Don’t miss the chance to experience this exciting production, now running through April 4th. This show contains brief elements of violence that may be intense for younger viewers.
