The MozART Group is a comical classical music group from Poland who performed at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo, UT last Friday. The group consists of four gen…ne….tle…eejjhmmm… hm. Not ladies (go to their show. You’ll get it later). Filip Jaślar, violin; Michał Sikorski, violin; Paweł Kowaluk, viola; and Bolesław (Bolek) Błaszczyk, cello. Along with their traditional string instruments, they also create music with whistles, balloons, and even ping pong paddles. Seeing MozART is a fantastic way to introduce young children to the world of classical music and string instruments. No previous knowledge of classical music is needed to enjoy your night and you will hear songs you will recognize, from classical songs to those you blast on the radio.

The MozART group members are very fun to watch, but don’t let that distract you from their skill. They are amazing musicians that have been performing together for 20 years and have all graduated from prestigious Academies of Music in Warsaw and Łódz, Poland. If you are not familiar with their performances, you can see many of their pieces on YouTube by following the link at the bottom of my review. If you have the chance to see them live, don’t miss it. The crowd gave a thunderous standing ovation anytime they tried to leave the stage and brought them back to the stage for three encore numbers.

Many of their pieces began as the traditional quartet music we often hear, but it wasn’t long before they would transform the music to a different genre, combine it with a modern song, or dancing. One of my favorite musical numbers is “How to Impress a Woman.” Really, it is a great way to impress anyone. Jaślar is accompanied by his fellow musicians as he performs with a ping pong paddle and slowly increases the difficulty by also playing his violin, and singing all at once. It is definitely a feat that one needs to witness in their lifetime.

If you’re not very familiar with string quartets or classical music, ”Anatomy of a String Quartet” is a great performance to watch. You experience the MozART Group’s humor, as well as get a taste for their musical skill.

Another fun performance was when Kowaluk left behind his viola to join Błaszczyk in playing his cello with four hands. Not to be left out (violinists just don’t stand for that) Jaślar and Sikorski joined together to play the same violin.

When you go to a MozART Group concert, prepare not to only be amazed by their prowess with their instruments. All of them sang, danced, roller skated, and more as they performed onstage. Sikorski even whipped out some dance moves that would make Michael Jackson proud.

When MozART Group comes to town, don’t miss their three-encore-worthy performance. They present a show that is perfect for old, young, and young at heart. You will enjoy beautiful music as well as your evening work-out as you laugh until your stomach hurts. They have concluded their USA tour dates for now, but keep an eye on their calendar so you can experience them live. For now, you can enjoy their humor and talent on their YouTube channel.
