Rattlin’ D’s hilarious production of My Funny Valentine is performed at the scenic Diamond Ranch Academy site, situated near the Hurricane Community Center in Hurricane, Utah. This love-themed variety show features songs, both new and old, and hilarious skits to tickle your funny bone.
This is a dinner theater and the starring role goes to the prime rib that had been smoked for 12 hours and has the most delectable rub. While we enjoyed our dinner, we were serenaded by the piano tunes of classic Valentine Songs from years gone by.
I was most impressed at the recognition of military service members of the audience either past or current. Drew Durrant (co-owner of Rattlin’ D with his wife Julie Durrant) acknowledged and thanked all who stood for their service. At intermission, there are many snacks provided for purchase. Fresh popcorn, candy, sodas, and a very special High Mountain Huckleberry Soda from their new sister theatre, Yellowstone Playhouse in Island Park, Idaho, just minutes outside of the western gate at Yellowstone National Park.
The Rattlin’ D does just two shows a year here in Southern Utah, a Christmas show and a Valentine’s Day show. During the summer, they take their wonderful talent up to Idaho for a summer stock of performances. This year, tickets go on sale for their 2020 Christmas show on October 5th, 2020. Put it in your calendar and buy tickets to this regularly sold out show.
D. Durrant keeps the show moving at a witty pace as the cast brings each skit to life. Rachel Peterson, Keely Ellsworth, Rio Lefevre, Stephen Michaud, and Justin Cullinmore bring to life a whole host of characters and hilarious antics. Choreographers Michaud and J. Durrant, Set Designer Rod Peterson and Light and Sound techs David Garrett/Kisty create a creative and well-executed atmosphere that allows the actors to shine.
The funniest song performed was my definitely my favorite: “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park” from Snow White. My favorite skit was they did a throwback from “Little Hands” of Saturday Night Live fave Tina Fey.
You are not going to want to miss Rattlin’ D’s My Funny Valentine. A little romance mixed with jokes, and a little local and political commentary sprinkled in makes for a “thigh slapping” good time- trust me, you’ll see. Come down to Hurricane hungry for an excellent meal and ready to see a fun Valentine show.
