The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)at The Center for the Arts at Kayenta in Ivins is a diamond in the rough and a positive staple for “Celebrating the Good in Arts”. In this show, which is the directorial debut of Marissa Walters, the audience is overjoyed with the talent of direction taken in the ever-popular and perfectly-coordinated comedy of this play. The title of the work by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield may appear long and tedious; however, it is the epitome of modern comedic entertainment.

In a very intimate and appropriately minimalistic theatrical setting, the players Anne Schwab, Ginger Nelson, and Greg Belnap perform a parody of Shakespeare’s greatest works through shortened synopses and/or merging of each play. As unique tradition dictates when performing The Complete Works…, three actors use their own given names and portray themselves on stage. The performers Schwab, Nelson, and Belnap are all veterans of the stage and it shows in their timing and improvisational skills, which add yet more unique twists in The Complete Works…, where going off-script is encouraged. Every night is sure to be spontaneous and fresh.

In many ways, the independent display of each performer is contagious with its energy and enthusiasm with moments of mixing rap and Shakespeare. Though the style is unorthodox, the audience raves. Be prepared to be an active participant when the fourth wall is broken and audience members become a part of the act. With cross-dressing, ridiculous costuming, exaggerated accents and over-dramatizations of classical characters. Schwab, Nelson, and Belnap have committed to outstanding performances and leave the audience with a level of deep appreciation for uninhibited performers.

A shout-out must be given to the costume and set designer, who put a spot light on the performers with the simplicity of the background and uniform looks to start out the show. It is up the actors to shine on their own merit and is well transitioned.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is to be a short run and is advised for the viewing of teenagers and adults as there is a plethora of adult humor and content. Be sure to come early to get your seats and leave the theater with laughter-filled hearts.
