For a few days each December, This is the Place Heritage Park in Salt Lake City gifts locals with a unique cultural holiday experience with their Christkindlmarkt. As visitors walk through the historic streets of This is the Place, they will pass wooden booths offering handcrafted gifts and treats perfect for anyone on their gift-giving lists this Christmas season. The spectacle mimics a traditional German market with food, music, and volunteers dressed in traditional lederhosen and dirndl. The scene is foreign and familiar all at once, supplying the comfort of every holiday at home, and introducing new cultural traditions.
Christkindlmarkt began seven years ago when, after living in Germany, Allyson Chard longed to bring a taste of that country back to her hometown of Salt Lake City. Thanks to volunteers and community donors, Christkindlmarkt has become a holiday tradition as thousands of people have added the event to their December schedules for years. Vendors from all over the state of Utah line the streets, offering handcrafted goods such as clothing, wooden toys, beeswax candles, and Christmas decor among so many other products. Children can enjoy pony rides and performances of traditional German dancing, making it a perfect family outing. Food can be found on every street. Homemade breads and baked goods, candied popcorn, German waffles, and Spud on a Stick are just a few of the delicious options available between booths.
