Beverly’s Terrace Plaza Playhouse in Washington Terrace, Utah continues its holiday tradition with Scrooge: A Christmas Carol. The adaptation by Beverly Olsen includes many original songs to the classic tale written by Charles Dickens. You may already be well-versed in this traditional story. Scrooge is an ornery, miserly, and hard-nosed old man who doesn’t believe in the Christmas spirit. As he gets home on Christmas Eve, he is visited by his old business partner Jacob Marley who urges Scrooge to listen to three Christmas spirits in order to save his immortal soul from endless punishment. Throughout the night, the spirits visit Scrooge and reveal to him who he really is and the true meaning of Christmas. Scrooge is especially moved by his employee Bob Cratchit and his family. Scrooge makes a promise to always keep Christmas and goes out to spread Christmas cheer to the people around him.

I was impressed with the size of the cast for this production. I have always believed that community theatre should be an experience for anyone and I was gladdened by director Jacci Olsen Florence and the Terrace Plaza Playhouse for being willing to give so many people this opportunity. They really make working with a huge ensemble look effortless, even with producing a cast of all ages. Mark Daniels (Kim Florence) as Ebenezer Scrooge is a delightfully crotchety old man and has a fun personality for the timeless character. Meanwhile, Jim Alvey (Derek Crimin) as Bob Cratchit and Tracie Davies (Rochelle Crimin) as Mrs. Cratchitt are both very endearing characters, exuding love and kindness for all. Their family unit onstage is heart-warming to watch. Sherri Folkman (Jacci Florence) as Christmas Past is a hoot and a holler, milking her ballet sequence for all its  worth. Doug Peterson (Don Wilhelm) as Christmas Present and Colton Lynch (Ethan Page) as Christmas Future are both strong and well-suited to their roles. And again, the ensemble is charming and very adept at the fun choreography given to them by ShaNae Littlewood,Florence, and Lindsey Poll.

The thing that impressed me the most was the incredible set design (construction by Brent Taft)and beautiful costumes by Cindy Simmons. These elements easily put me into the mood for the musical and I adored seeing every single person come out in their lively garments and interact with the life-like set. Each element is meticulously detailed to help give an authentic feel to the show. The lighting and sound by DD Lynch are always on point and fun, especially for the dance sequences. One of my favorites was when Jacob Marley was onstage. Lynch’s design easily shows the spooky nature of the visitation.

In all, the Terrace Plaza Playhouse continues to perfect its long-standing showing of Scrooge: A Christmas Carol for the Washington Terrace, Utah community. This is a fun family-friendly show that really shows off the talent of this community. Make this your new holiday tradition with so many others and get your tickets today!
