The Utah New Works Theatre Project‘s mission is to give an opportunity for playwrights to have a place and forum to write and present their work, and the Utah New Works Ten: Ten-Minute Plays is just the forum for this. Taking place in Freedom Preparatory Academy’s Black Box Theater (a nice little space) Ten is a lot of fun for those who like fresh, fast-paced, often funny new theatre pieces.

The program starts with two staged readings, one is light and funny, the other is thought-provoking. The rest of the shows are all 10-minute staged plays and are all tight, and I had several laugh out loud moments. Interestingly, several junior high students are involved and do a fantastic job.

This year’s offerings:

Barnelby, Kipplinton, & the Lost Ruin of Amxes Katar, written by Caleb Andrus, directed by Oz Morris.
2:13 AM by J. Scott Bronson.
Chester, written by Abigail Smith, directed by Heather Oberlander. Melinda’s Molar, written by Deirdre Nickel, directed by Samantha Miller.
Mama Tallulah, written by Janine Sobeck Knighton, directed by Jacom D. Clarkson.
Exit Pursued by Bear, written by Emma Parkinson, directed by Heather A. Stringham.
Kitchen Garden, written by Georgia Buchert, directed by Stephanie Ollerton. At This Time, written and directed by Tyler Dawson.
The Beginner’s Guide to Witchcraft Home Correspondence Course, written and directed by Cody Cutler.
Stage Five, written by Heather A. Stringham and Scott M. Stringham, directed by S Stringham.

Parking is quite a ways from the door to get in (which is on the south side of the school.) Park by the buses in the parking lot and then head for the building and you’ll find it.
