NAME OF PLAY: The Ten Show
THEATER CO: The Hive Collaborative, 591 S. 300 West, Provo, UT 84601
Interview with Dennis Agle, Jr.
1. What is the craziest way you can think of to summarize the plot of this production? The ten-minute play festival meets American Idol. Twenty plays over the course of four weeks.
2. If you had to describe the process of putting on this show with one word, what would it be and why? Courage. The process of putting on a play in a week is challenging enough, but to have much of it live-streamed is next-level gutsy for our cast and crew.
3. If any part of this production worked like a dream-come-true, what was that, and who is the responsible party? The biggest struggle was to find 10 people willing to buy into the process as producers along with the time commitment. The producers in this show have been terrific to work with.
4. What is the most bizarre thing you’ve learned while working on this production? Something is going to go wrong during each night of the production. It’s pretty much guaranteed. What we don’t know is what the thing will be. But when it happens, the trick is to keep calm and do your best to fix it while carrying on.
5. What was the most critical part of this production that you were worried would fall apart but didn’t? The live-stream hasn’t broken mid-stream. Knocking on wood as I write that.
6. What do you do right before each performance to get ready? Deep breathing exercises. Right after each performance? Exhale.
7. What is your favorite inside-joke from the show? Quote/line? Costume? Set piece? Etc. Anything can happen. And probably will.
8. What have been the challenges of this project? One of the biggest challenges has been trying to get all 4 to 6 plays’ light and sound to be tailored to each play, without being able to drastically move lights or set structure around between plays.
10. Which other technical department did you work most closely with on this production, and what specifically did you work on? Something more amazing than putting on a production in less than a week? That’s a hard thing to find.
11. What is the mission of your theater? Our focus is to go off the beaten path with new theatrical work and online series, but to emphasize productions that remind us what we have in common with one another.
12. How did it start? Brothers Ken Agle and Dennis Agle kept looking for homes to stage concepts they had developed, but eventually realized that they needed to make such a home themselves.
13. What are the challenges of running a theater? Putting on quality productions is a big enough challenge in and of itself. But getting “butts in the seats” for works that are unfamiliar is yet a bigger challenge. Our hope is that once people experience a production at The Hive, they’ll come to trust the brand that works here will be positive experiences and something just a little bit different.
14. What are the joys? When all the pieces come together to form a wonderful theatrical experience, as evidence by how long the audience lingers after the curtain call.
Quotes from participants:
Joel Applegate (actor): Being a part of something that is produced so quickly has given me the opportunity to really explore a character quickly and intensely and it’s been great to find this within myself. The process is wonderful.
Chris Hults (director): What I love about The Ten Show is that The Hive has built something NEW. Art needs innovation, and the Agles are trying new ways to juxtapose and blend different kinds of art, entertainment, game play, and audience engagement. I’m happy to support this, and I have enjoyed doing the art AND playing the game!
Jordyn Aspen Cardwell (producer): This experience has been challenging, exciting, and incredibly enriching. I am grateful for the experience I gained at Southern Utah University as I have felt well prepared week to week.
Rachel Mecham (actor): The most fun part for me has been seeing how each director works differently. My first week, the director was very detail-oriented. The second week, my director was very very hands-off. The third week, the director was somewhere in between. This has been an absolutely crazy few weeks for me, but I really love the format of the show and how quickly everything goes.
