Miscast: Broadway in a Whole New Key at Draper Historic Theater brings a fun romp for kids and adults alike. As Broadway-babies know, every year some of the most famous Broadway performances are given a twist in a Miscast charity event: where actors who would normally not be cast in a certain roles are given freedom to perform numbers in non-traditional ways.

Draper Historic Theater’s Miscast is just that, but with flash and flare (*cue jazz hands). Whether it is me-dressed-as-women (always comedic gold), dogs replacing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats’ characters, or a modern-day Sound of Music teenage romance—hint: dating apps change the impact of romance when you’re “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”— this show creates audience captivation.

A variety of players star in each coloring page of musical numbers. Impressively creative was a “non-princessed” Wednesday Addams played by Serena Segura Mackrell, chanting a doe-eyed lullaby of “Part of Your World”; where gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs have been “miscast” as blades, matches and Voodoo dolls.

Another silly delight: Lord Farquaad, played by Seth Tippets, as a “Tall” Farquaad. A role Seth could never play standing-up; Tippets is well above 6 feet— the traditional actor of Farquaad scoots around on his knees while donning puppet legs. Which is why a comedic contrast is procured when sung by the towering Tippets on his real-life human feet.

Overall the show is simple: a black stage, picture projections, and props that are the indicators of performance changes. The real kaleidoscopes of the show are the well-chosen talent by director Jessica Yergensen. Overall, this eclectic cast and crew give a “miscast” variety show that had eight-year-olds on booster-seats and grandmas-of-the-cast-members chuckling in the same key.

The show runs two more performances November 9th and 11th at 7:00 PM. Get tickets online or at the door.
