Salem Community Theater presents Jarom Loch and Olivia Loch’s adaptation of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow at the Salem Community Center through October 29, 2019. It is a fun way to get your Halloween scares going during this spooky season.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a classic tale of mystery, love, and ghosts, fit for all ages in this family-friendly adaptation. This production is staged as a narrative of a grandfather (George Loch), recounting a legend to his grandchildren as a bedtime story. The dialogue between the children and the grandfather keeps the plot moving along. It also adds a touch of comedy outside of the existing comedic lines within the story.

Nate Schaffer  plays Ichabod Crane, the hapless school teacher who fancies himself a dandy. N. Schaffer does a great job showing a roller coaster of emotions throughout the course of the production. Eden Durham plays the lovely innocent Katrina Van Tassel and  grabs the audience with her naturalistic acting. Her conversations with other characters feel based in reality. Gabe Shaffer plays the manly Brom Bones and is the center of a couple of shocking moments, and pulls off his reactions in a way that keeps the audience fixed on the moment. Other characters of note are Jarom Loch (Mr Lachlan McRipper) who steals the show in every scene he is a part of. He is very animated, edgy, and you can’t help but watch because you have to know what he is going to do next. Cambrie Peterson (Charlotte) is also a very natural and relatable young actor. Overall, the cast does a great job, and they look like they are having a great time being a part of this production.

On the technical side, every cast member is audible. The performance takes place in an environment that allows the sound to travel nicely. The sound and light effects also really help the atmosphere pull you into the ghostly tale. Good job, tech team.

Be warned, there are a couple of very loud gunshots and some strobing light effects for a short period. It would do good to have young children plug their ears for those gunshots.
