Ziegfeld Theater Arts in Ogden, Utah
boldly presents the beloved cult classic The Rocky Horror
Show, with music, lyrics, and book by Richard O’Brien,
to a new generation of followers. This humorous musical, which tells the story
of a young engaged couple who accidentally falls into the hands of cross-dressing
Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter, a Dr. Frankenstein type character, first premiered in London
in 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre. After playing at several other
theatres throughout London, and running for a total of 2,960 shows, it closed
in 1980. Meanwhile, Tim Curry, who starred in the original London
production, became synonymous with the show and reprised his role as Dr. Frank
‘N’ Furter for the 1975 film adaptation The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Aside from its cult following, The Rocky Horror Show is said to have a
great influence on the movement for sexual equality during this era, a time
when sexual fluidity was neither recognized nor accepted.
Director Eb Madson does an outstanding job bringing together a talented cast and crew to bring The Rocky Horror Show to life, incorporating all that makes live theater unique. The comedy that is emphasized throughout the show keeps the audience engaged. The live band, lead by pianist Sharon Datuin, is strategically placed onstage to give the show the feel of a live rock concert. Drummer David Knowles, guitarist Jon Allen, and bassist Jess Hall add their own character to the performance by interacting with the actors during some of the numbers.
As the story unravels, engaged couple Brad (Bryan Andrews) and Janet (Kali Williams) find themselves in the clutches of a man on a mission, the likes of which they have never met. Andrews gives an inspired performance as he continually connects with his castmates. His vocals are clear and strong, most notably in “Damn It, Janet” and the emotion he gives as Brad tries so valiantly to protect Janet convinces the audience that he is completely dedicated to his girl. Williams is equally engaging. Her introduction to this new world is truly a baptism by fire. Williams perfectly portrays the innocent virgin who knows that her man will protect her. Williams’ vocals are strong and her chemistry with Andrews makes her performance authentic.
Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter, played by Jeremy Gross, tries desperately to convince Brad and Janet that his way is the best way. Gross is 100% wholly dedicated to his role. From the costume, including some fabulous platform boots, to his accent, to his walk, to his hair, J. Gross thoroughly embodies the role of Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter. J. Gross’ vocals are stellar, completing his character. His performance is one to behold, especially during the audience favorite, The Time Warp. He commands the stage and has great rapport with the cast, especially Maxx Teuscher who plays Riff Raff, and Samantha Burt who plays Magenta/Usherette. J. Gross and Angel Martinez, who plays Frank ‘N’ Furter’s creation, Rocky, play off each other expertly. The unlikely pair look, sound, and act well together. Martinez’s strength is very impressive as he portrays the perfect specimen of a man. The tricks he performs by himself and with others take great control and precise movement.
Columbia, Frank ‘N’ Furter’s hopeful love interest, is played by Rebecca Stephens. She is fearless onstage, dedicated to her role. Kelliann Johnson, who plays Eddie, is force as she moves across the stage. Her giant personality demands the audience’s attention. Kirk Stapley is hilarious as Dr. Scott. Although his appearance is brief, the audience is given clear picture of who Dr. Scott is and what his business is with Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter. The Transylvanian ensemble is one of the strongest ensemble casts I’ve had the privilege of watching in any show. Their vocals are outstanding and the choreography by choreographer Bryan Andrews is intricate and detailed. Cast members Noelani Brown, Dylan Brinkman, Pierce Gross, Maddie Lund, Mejai Perry, and Wyatt Welch work together to give their very best performance. A stand-out moment for me is when the ensemble creates a car, wipers included, as Brad and Janet make their way through a stormy night. The Narrator Bill Allred (Bob Bedore) of the radio station X96 adds a comedic element, interacting with the audience throughout the performance.
Visually, this show is a treat for the eyes. The bright costumes, created by Madson and Becky Knowles, and use of neon lights creates texture that adds to the story. Hair colorist Sally DeTorres and wig specialist Josh Robinson expertly match the boldness of the costumes, giving each cast member a unique look that helps develop their character. The interchangeable set, designed by Madson, B. Knowles, and Ryan Sabin makes good use of the space, creating levels to be used for many different scenarios.
