Mamma Mia! now playing at Beverly’s Terrace Plaza Playhouse in Ogden, Utah, was written by Catherine Johnson and takes hit songs from the musical group ABBA and turns them into a delightful story about a girl’s mission to find out the identity of her father before her wedding day. Sophie invites the three likely candidates to return to her home in Greece in hopes of having her father walk her down the aisle, while trying to keep her intentions hidden from her free-spirited mother, Donna. The show originally opened in the West End on April 6,1999 and has enjoyed enormous success both in London and on Broadway ever since.
This charming production, directed by Shelby Ferrin, features a beautiful set that transports the audience to Greece and allows for exciting choreography, done by Kelley Richardson.
Katelynn Ostler is a star in her role as Sophie, which is evident immediately during her opening number “I Have a Dream.” She is a delight to watch as she danced her way through the chaos surrounding the wedding with fiancé, Sky, played by Tyler O’Bagy.Ostler and O’Bagy have a fun chemistry together, which is particularly evident during “Lay All Your Love On Me.” This was my favorite number of the show. Sky’s friends are hilarious and are not to be underestimated, much like the rest of the ensemble.
Even more hilarious is the colorful trio that makes up “Donna and the Dynamos”: Donna (Natalie Haddock) Tanya (Annie Ferrin), and Rosie (Kim Tolman). Haddock plays Donna with a fantastic range of emotion, creating a deep character that is exciting to watch, especially in her performance of “Money, Money, Money”. Ferrin and Tolman are stars in their own right as well. I was absolutely delighted with Ferrin’s performance of “Does Your Mother Know?” and Tolman’s “Take a Chance on Me.” These performances are absolutely hilarious to watch.
Not to be forgotten are the trio of dads, each with their own brand of charm and fun. Matt Hewitt’s performance as Sam is memorable and endearing. Brett Johnson as Harry and Tad Wilson as Bill each bring a unique sense of humor to the show. Watching these three interact with Ostler’s Sophie is heartwarming and genuine; in fact, the whole cast had a genuine chemistry and energy that can’t be taught or directed.
This production of Mamma Mia! at Beverly’s Terrace Plaza Playhouse, playing now through November 16, 2019 is a delightful experience for audience members of all ages. Featuring an incredible cast and using songs known and loved by every generation, this charming story is a reminder of the importance of family, friends, adventure, and good music. This is one Greek wedding you won’t want to miss!
