Dracula the Musical at the University of Utah Department of Theatre at the Marriott Center for Dance in Salt Lake City Utah is an early start for you Halloween lovers. Denny Berry brilliantly directs this well-known legend. In the beginning, she has some of the actors in the ensemble roam the stage making hissing and screeching noises that help drag the audience into the story before the show begins. The cozy chairs make the audience sink into their seats while waiting in anticipation for the show to begin. This blood curdling show is one that makes you want to come back and experience the thrill every night.

Dracula (Chase Quinn) stuns the crowd with his ability to sing with his vampire accent. Quinn falls in love with multiple girls throughout the show, which leads to the plot intensifying each time one dies. Quinn’s duet with Talia Heiss (Mina), “There’s Always a Tomorrow”, is breathtaking and heart wrenching, a love song that ends with Quinn leaving Heiss. Mr. Reinfeld (Sammy Daoud) portrays being a mad man perfectly, from the way he pretends to eat flies to the way he slinks and slides around the stage. Lucy (Hayley Cassity) shows to the audience from choosing who to marry all the way to becoming a vampire is phenomenal, not to mention, her singing voice is flawless.

The ensemble works together to fill the hall with harmony. One of the best parts of the ensemble in this show is they all work as a team to move the sets. They are onstage the entire time while staying in character the entire time.

Berry is both the director and choreographer. She meticulously cleaned the choreography to make all the actors dance flawlessly in sync. Berry has incredible attention to detail. She added a fog machine into show adding a layer of mystery, excitement, and a spooky factor.

Of course, Berry had a lot of helping hands. Set designer Rachael Harned brilliantly decided to make the sets become various types of set pieces; from a castle, graveyard, and a ferry. Lighting designer Cole Adams cleverly added red light beams while Dracula moves around the castle, which adds to the spooky factor of the show. Costume designer Heather Rogers clearly thought through the story while creating the costumes. Every time Bradford drinks someone’s blood, he gets younger; the costumer demonstrates this by his wig at the beginning being long and white, then after he drinks blood it goes black and shorter.

Sound designer Aaron Hoenig creates a sound design filled with the woof and warp of true beauty.  The music is the best part of this show and we could hear it all perfectly. Music director/Conductor Alex Marshall has his singers and orchestra in tune (pun intended) beautifully. The music in this work is fantastic.  The voices are lovely, the orchestra is wonderful, and the songs shine in this musical.

Come enjoy University of Utah’s spooky and exciting Dracula, The Musical before it’s too late.

This show is not appropriate for children under the age of 8 due to dramatic themes like beheading and jump scares. And for those of you who are sensitive to flashing lights, they also use strobe lights and a fog machine.
