At the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival, A Romance of Wind & Fire, written and directed by Brady Wilkinson, asks the question of what would happen to Verona if the ambitious Hamlet had been born in the place of the lovesick Romeo: what plans does the moody mastermind have for the city? How does Juliet feel about this? And how do they feel about each other? Although the Fringe performance only comprises Act 3 of the script, it is enough to show just how brightly and violently a passion between two sharp young lovers with nothing to lose can become.

Ryon Sharette as Hamlet feels like a compelling alchemy of Les Miserables’s revolutionary Enjorlas and all the brooding sincerity of Game of Thrones’s Jon Snow. Comet Higley is as dynamic as they are charming as Juliet. Their generous, infectious energy form a kaleidoscope of tenderness, mischief, and even danger. It is no struggle to believe that Hamlet has fallen for this character when the audience already has.

Shelby Howard in the role of Mercutio is deliciously coquettish as he flirts with Juliet, taunts Tybalt, and maneuvers his way around the rest of house Capulet. But when things take a turn for the serious, we quickly see the fierce loyalty that burns underneath. Jared Lind’s Friar Laurenceraises the stakes of the conflict between the lover’s houses with his keen intellect and unflinching honesty about the complications that such a romance poses to the state of Verona.

Mike Ryan pulls double duty as both Lord Capulet andTybalt. As Juliet’s father, he balances pompousness with formidable authority, which quickly helps the audience understand Juliet’s desire to rebel. His Tybalt, however, bursts suddenly onto the scene, radiating anime character-like energy with his seething anger, rock-star hairstyle, and lightsaber. As the Nurse, Angela Wright-Stevens lightens much of the play’s angst with her affection for Juliet and no-nonsense response to the ever-escalating shenanigans in the Capulet household.

Playwright and director Brady Wilkinsonmakes an appearance as the mysterious Apothecary. The script, however, contains even more surprises.
