Malleable Vulnerability; An Invocation of Self at the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival is instantly recognizable as something very familiar, yet far beyond expectations. Beginning with a sparse stage set with a blank canvas and assorted bottles and brushes, Viviane Turman channels a Bob-Ross-like art creation experience, which in and of itself is fascinating to watch. But as Turman layers on her audio narrative and soundscape, with help from sound designer Alfonso Belloso, the audience is pulled into her emotional journey, from genesis to this singular point in time. Turman keeps her back to the audience and her focus on the quickly blossoming self-portrait, occasionally punctuating the audio with tears and laughs. In the 30 or so minutes it takes Turman to morph her piece from blank canvas to beautiful figure art, her heart, scars, and self-discovery are viscerally transferred to the finished painting.

Viviane Turman’s Malleable Vulnerability performance and art deeply affected my heart and mind. I laughed and I cried and, again, I was amazed by her talent and that she puts so much into whatever she does. In this performance she bares her soul and it might even help others to look inward.
