Love, Annis the heart-wrenching true story of Ann Logan Corthell, as produced by Pussycat Productions at the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival at The Gateway. Written by Harrison Corthell, Ann’s son, this play tells the difficult but important story of addiction and motherhood through an emotional one-woman performance. This, coupled with the intimate venue, truly will remind audiences of why they love independent theater and why fringe festivals are so important. Directed by Teresa Sanderson, the show begins with an appropriate trigger warning for audience members, as it contains adult themes such as addiction, the death of a child, and death of a parent. I sat in my chair sweating nervously as I heard this announcement; had I been forewarned, I personally would not have chosen to review it, but I am now so very glad I stayed as the play left me in tears.
April Fossen’s portrayal of Ann throughout is an incredibly raw and vulnerable performance and the actress makes eye contact with audience members many times throughout the course of the hour-long show. Those in attendance often feel that she is performing just for them. Her astounding acting leaves attendees pondering the complexity of Ann’s life experiences as it seems impossible that Fossen’s emotional delivery simply couldn’t be fabricated.
Love, Ann is a show to be experienced and felt and will be performed through August 11, I honestly feel blessed to have witnessed such a private and poignant piece of theater. Grab your tissues and don’t miss Love, Ann.
