The annual counter-culture tradition that is Saturday’s Voyeur is back at Salt Lake Acting Company.  Now in its 41st year of production in Salt Lake City, the satirical parody of Utah life is retooled annually by creators Allen Nevins and Nancy Borgenicht.  The latest incarnation swirls around SLAC stalwart Annette Wright as Mary Pop-in, complete with magic umbrella. But make no mistake, this is no spoonful of sugar. The satire is biting, timely, and very topical.  Local religion is the focal point, as usual; however, national politics play a large part in the overarching conceit. Without delving too much into possible spoilers, rest assured that naming conventions, alcohol content, and Utah’s Junior Senator are all in the cross-hairs.  Theatergoers who have been flocking to the show for over 40 years will find old standards and a healthy dose of new material, while reminiscing in the familiar surroundings of the thrust stage and bistro seating of the Marmalade Hilltheater.

Choreography, song, and movement combine to lift the social parody to well-practiced heights, and a fun challenge for the audience is to match up the musical theater meme with the jokes. Director and Co-Choreographer Cynthia Flemingalong with Co-Choreographer William Richardsonadd precise blocking and dance to the milieu. Set design by Michael Horejsi, lighting by Jesse Portillo, costumes by Heidi Ortega, and sound by Maxwell Seltenrichadd to the projection backdrop created by Dwight Camillucci. The effect is immersive, yet still allows the very talented cast to shine. Music is adeptly handled by Michael LeavittNick Fleming, and Spencer Kellogg

Familiar tropes like green gelatin, weak beer, and racial and gender oppression are among the many wielded by Aalliyah AnnBradley HatchDaisy AllredDan LarrinagaFiona HannanJacob WeitlaufJulie Silvestro WaiteJustin IvieMaddie CooperMatthew Tripp, and Robert Scott Smith. Smith, along with Ivie and Larrinaga, perform the multi-character heavy lifting. All the cast members are precise, passionate, and spit-spot on with vocals and movement. Smith moves particularly well from playing Mitt Romney to in-drag Natasha without a hitch. Perhaps the only stumble comes from the cognitive dissonance of Wright’s expletive spewing Mary Pop-in. The shock works to great effect initially, but becomes somewhat gratuitous after several repetitions. It’s hard to imagine, though, any real weakness in this solid, familiar ensemble.
