Desert Star Playhouse in Murray, Utah, is showing Sunday School Musical: The Greatest Roadshow. With Ed Farnsworth’s script, which is based on the original melodrama by Ben Millet, Scott Holman directed a musical full of laughter and enjoyment for the entire family. Live pianists Catie Omer Quigley and David Slack included, Desert Star Playhouse invites the audience to participate throughout the show by booing, cheering, laughing, and occasionally singing. Not to mention, it’s a dinner theatre with free popcorn for everybody. Throughout the show, there are many songs you will recognize combined with altered lyrics, borrowing tunes from The Greatest Showman, High School Musical, and various roadshows.

This musical is just what the title describes: it is a Sunday School Musical in the form of a roadshow. As the characters attempt to put on their Sunday School show, Penny Windbreaker (Brittany Shamy/ Jessica Pearce)plots something devilish in the song “To the Other Side” with her stunning voice, and later tries to tempt our hero, Phineas (Tynan Portillo/ Jonathan Harr), to help her. This creates a wonderful plot that only thickens when he gets the lead role. Phineas and Amanda Hugginkiss (Madison Bartell/, Amanda Frisby) share a breathtaking duet of encouragement called “Come On, Try” to fix the script that Laurel Deacon (Sara McDonald/ Melissa Cecala) had butchered. It won’t take long to recognize the teen romance between Palmyra Kirtland (Matt O’Malley/Zackery Western) and Sally Stache (Larissa Villers/Crystal Loralee), the two love-struck nerds adding an entirely new level of comedy to the show. Linoleum Dynamite (Daniel Akin) perfectly parodies Napoleon Dynamite, which makes his awkward character even more comedic. Lastly, Bishop Deacon (Dann Howard/Jeff Ford) just does not care, giving permission for anything without a second thought.

For an incredible evening out, endless laughter, and oodles of fun, go to Desert Star Playhouse’s Sunday School Musical: The Greatest Roadshow and be ready to be entertained. It’s also family-friendly, so feel free to bring the whole family along and eat free popcorn all evening long.
