The setting sun cast a perfect warm glow on the mountains as the historic Saltair building in Magna, Utah hosted LANY’s Malibu Nights world tour on June 11th.
After a massive traffic jam and queue backup, I was finally standing amidst the crowd of anxious fans facing the stage; it was worth the waiting to be there. With three of my close friends, we found a spot on the grass to wait for the greatly anticipated moment when the band would enter the stage.
Prior to the band’s grand entrance, pop artist Sasha Sloan graced the audience with her marvelous music. Her talent was unmistakable as her voice filled not only the venue but also the surrounding salt flat area. Her interactions with the audience enhanced the ambience of the event.
With songs that center on difficult break ups and elated romance, this band is geared toward teenagers and adults. However, the venue itself is suitable for all ages, with a separate upper deck area for 21+ guests who want to purchase alcohol. The deck area has a decent view of the stage, whether the show is held in the inside of the building or outside. I have been to events here during the winter when the artist performs inside, and it can be quite crowded and stuffy, but when weather permits the show is held outside. The closer to the stage, the tighter packed the crowd grows. For some, staying to the back but having more space is more enjoyable than being pushed in a mosh pit up front.
Merchandise is sold inside the building, and the lines for this can also be quite extensive. There are bathrooms, although some stall doors need fixing, and there is one ATM that also attracts a long line. Snacks and water bottles (although there is a drinking fountain) can also be purchased, with cash only. Parking at the Saltair is a bit messy; many visitors park far away and have to walk about half a mile or so. For those willing, parking at the venue is $10. The repercussion to this comes when attempting to leave the event, for cars are jammed and usually stuck for a while before being able to move.
There is something quite magical about spending a night singing with the original artist who wrote incredible songs, while standing alongside people who love and relate to the lyrics too. As LANY says in their song ILYSB, “Oh my heart hurts so good, I love you babe, so bad.” We love you LANY, so bad.
