The Rooftop Concert Series, put on by Provo City, is a classic to summers in Provo. This is the tenth year the event has been running, and unfortunately it is also the last year. The show is every first Friday of the month during the summer. The first event for the season, held on June 7th, was a roaring success; the streets filled with people of all ages as the artists began their performances.
Many families with young children bring chairs to relax in during the performances, while the teenagers and adults are content standing amidst the crowds of enthusiastic listeners. Nearby shops full of pastries and ice cream bustle with customers throughout the evening. Overall, the vibes at this series are all positive.
To start the night, Robert Loud embraced the stage with his impressive guitar and vocal skills alongside his band. His original sounds and upbeat music pumped up the crowd for a marvelous night full of good music.
Mindy Gledhill, another featured artist for the event, is a pop singer and songwriter. With a glamorous sparkling outfit, she lit the stage. Her music is a mixture of catchy tunes and soothing tones. Her lyrics are remarkably relatable and uplifting; her performance suitable for all ages.
Finally, a Provo original and favorite, The National Parks band rocked Center Street with their indie/folk pop music. Their performance illuminated the night as the sun set and the crowd sang along. With Sydney Macfarlane singing and playing the keyboard, Brady Parks rocking it on his guitar and vocals, Megan Parks owning the stage with her violin, and Cameron Brannelly smashing it on the drums, this band was sincerely embraced by its countless fans in Utah and beyond.
For me, attending this concert is always on my summer bucket list. From the music to the people to the food, there is something everyone can enjoy. I love being in crowds of people and feeling the high energy of everybody in the area; however, even for those who do not like big crowds, there are nearby shops that are still connected to the fun, playing the music from the bands without being in the center of the crowds. Everyone should take the opportunity to be involved in such an iconic summer series. It’s also free of charge!
For this popular event, parking is available off the side streets of Center Street as well as near Smith’s grocery store. For those who want to save the planet, there is also bus transportation, as well as a Bicycle Valet parking, thanks to the Provo Bicycle Collective.
As an outdoor event, weather can be unpredictable. Fortunately, the first event had nearly flawless temperature and weather conditions, as the summer heat hadn’t quite kicked in. Water bottles and merchandise are sold around the performing area if wanted. In addition, the acoustics to the shows are excellent and even reach the local food venues.
