High school students and UVU Theater Department students alike settled in Tuesday morning to take in Jason Alexander’s Masterclass at UVU’s new Noorda Performing Arts Center in Orem. Unlike many Masterclass type events however, this did not simply mean a rambling Q&A session. This Masterclass was literally a wealth of specific, actionable lessons in the craft and business of acting. Alexander was funny, warm, and ready to teach.
Beginning with basic theory and modeled examples, Alexander showed his versatility and style as an actor, and it was readily evident why he has remained such a popular entertainer. Using a magic trick as a metaphor for the broader magic of theater, he built on the idea that actors can create vast immersive illusions. However, Alexander was quick to point out that theater magic doesn’t just happen because actors “feel it”. Hard work, preparation, and attention to the technicalities make good theater happen.
Choosing a trio of UVU Theater students, the Tony-winning Broadway star used a variety of methods to help refine and reshape previously rehearsed monologues. The process was fascinating to watch, and the dozens of high school students in the audience were enthralled. Alexander was, by turns both supportive coach and harsh critic, but always kind. I have no doubt that the experience these students shared onstage with Alexander will be long remembered.
Jason Alexander – Masterclass played for one day only on March 26, 2019, as part of UVU’s Week of Dreams event. The Week of Dreams continues through March 30th.
