ImprovBroadway in Provo is on a roll with their comedic improvisational performances. Set on a journey to create their own pilot episode for VidAngel Studios, ImprovBroadway has been filming performances funny enough to make you laugh yourself silly. Thursday night’s 7:00 PM show on March 14th was no exception as the audience enjoyed a rendition of A Night at the ImprovBroadway.
The show format fits the types of improv shows that have been on television in the past. With one emcee (Gabe Ericson), four players (Zach Atherton, David Padeken, Adam Broud, and Shae McCombs), and even a live band. The band featured Alex Arnold on piano, Joseph Facer on guitar, Chris Morgan on bass, and Grant Taylor on drums. The band is a huge part of the show as ImprovBroadway stands out from the pack with their focus on musical theater as a form of improv. Each of the players displayed their musical prowess with varying musical styles, including a whispering heavy metal performance by Atherton about a rhinoceros. McCombs belted out in heartfelt agony over her doll’s missing head. In addition to the musical genius of the players, they were able to utilize accents and physical comedy to enhance their scenes. Broud utilized a very convincing Wisconsin accent for his character in an otherwise British band and Padeken embodied the persona of a social media obsessed Instagram star who live streamed his own first date. Ericson adds to the fun while interacting with the audience and setting the direction for the players’ scenes, even if he did imply that yours truly is a geek for liking Star Trek.
Even the audience gets in on the fun during an ImprovBroadway show. The audience was also invited to play with a few lucky souls invited onstage to recount their first dates with a few of the players. Two brave individuals relinquished their cell phones and had their text messages inserted as dialogue into a scene. The results of both were absolutely fantastic.
