Titus Productions Theatre Company proudly presents The Three Musketeers at the Midvale Performing Arts Center in Midvale, Utah, the adventurous new musical written by director/company founder Jake Andersen, music by Andersen, Aaron Webb, and Lorrinda Christensen, based on the book by Alexandre Dumas. This motivated group of actors brings friendship, laughter, and love to the stage. As I sat in the audience, the feelings of camaraderie and perseverance penetrated to my heart. The relationships formed throughout the show are both heartwarming and inspirational.

The passion Andersen has for his art is palpable as the actors are expertly directed. The story opens as the audience is introduced to the young D’Artagnan, played by Sam Martinez, who is bidding his mother farewell. He is young and full of confidence as sets off on his quest to become a musketeer. Armed only with a letter from his father and the skills he learned from the same, Martinez shows perseverance in reaching his goal. On the way, D’Artagnan meets up with the persistent Planchet (Tanya Rasmussen) who becomes his unlikely choice for a “man”servant. Rasmussen has a strong stage presence and is convincing as the strong-minded Planchet but tender-hearted enough to find her one true love.

D’Artagnan faces many obstacles on his quest, including the deceptive Cardinal Richelieu (Stephen Chucay) and his ever-menacing sidekick, Rochefort (Michael Thrall). Chucay and Thrall deliver the needed evil force onstage as they delve into their roles as antagonists. Only after D’Artagnan overcomes his early obstacles does he finally meet up with the men who can help him reach his goal: The Three Musketeers. Athos, played by Oran Artaud Marc Henri de Baritault, Porthos, played by Josh Astle, and Aramis, played by Anthony Hernandez, possess a brotherhood onstage rarely felt by such an eclectic trio. The maturity de Baritault brings to the stage nicely balances the playful nature of Astle’s character. Hernandez has a strong but reverent presence and is memorable to the audience. The three of them work together to help D’Artagnan reach his quest of becoming a musketeer while Milady de Winter (Rossy Thrall) does everything in her power to stop them from achieving their quest.

Constance, played by Jennica Henderson, is a necessary piece to the puzzle and is relevant in D’Artagnan’s life. She shows her devotion to him and his quest throughout the story. Henderson brings a peacefulness to the role that is much needed in this high energy story. Madame D’Treville (Denise Adams) is another necessary character in the quest for good. Adams brings a motherly feeling to the role as she strives to do whatever is necessary to help the Musketeers.

Vocal director Rachael Rasmussen should be proud of the range of voices she coaches for this production. Each actor brings something special to his character, especially the strength and youthfulness Martinez needs for D’Artagnan during the song “Let Me Go Part 1”, and the tight harmonies in “Bravery” provided by de Baritault, Astle, Hernandez, and D’Artagnan to show the connection of the roles they play. Andersen, who also choreographed this production, does an excellent job in bringing relevant dances to the stage for the time period of this show. M. Thrall, who choreographed the fight scenes, makes them look authentic without being too violent for the audience. The committee of costumers, including Amy Martinez, Rasmussen, Andersen, and Emily Landeen, gathers and creates some beautiful pieces, especially for Queen Anne of Austria (Amaris DiScuillo, Nikki North) and Madame D’Treville.

Titus Productions Theatre Company’s The Three Musketeers is full of adventure and love and friendship and is suitable for the whole family. The audience was riveted in anticipation of the next part of the story.
