In Centerville, Utah, CenterPoint Legacy Theater is presenting Lend Me a Tenor, and I am happy to lend you some great advice. Go see it! The Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday cast of this production does this comedic favorite solid justice—guilty-with-no-parole—Justice. The scene is set in comedy by the lighthearted bellhop, played by Holden Smith, who is adorable and quirky at the same time. Michael Gardner in the lead role as Max hams up the nerdy personality of the character, a great casting choice as his stature matches the character as well. It does not come as a surprise that Gardner has earned his BFA in theatre.
His romantic counterpart, Maggie (Katie Plott), has a delightful bounce and an eagerness that gently develops into maturity as the play progresses. The Money-driven Saunders is brought to life superbly by Michael Hohl, who looks and embraces the part. M. Hohl is able to enjoy this theater experience with his wife, theater veteran Jennifer Parker Hohl, who plays Maria, the tenor Tito’s wife. The chemistry between Maria and Tito, apparent from the beginning, is so ignited by J. Hohl and Dale Boam, who plays Tito Morelli. Boam’s character choices are spot on and made me laugh out loud, especially as he chewed the lamp chord after Maria’s exit.
Julia, played by Laura Krummenacher, arrives late in the play but this late arrival does not stall her performance. Not only is she costumed to the hilarious top with the tallest tiara, she also has voice inflections and physical mannerisms that echo the hilarity of the character. Another late arrival in the show is Diana, played by the sultry-voiced Kati Paul, who could Jessica Rabbit a run for her money.
The set by Scott Van Dyke is absolutely stunning and made me feel as if I was looking into a ritzy hotel room. Costumer/Director Jennie Richardson is quite inspired in Lend Me a Tenor. The artistic choices are impressive, the costumes are lush and delightful.
I highly recommended this entertaining, silly, and enjoyable play with its cast that so obviously displays camaraderie and chemistry. So much fun. CenterPoint Legacy Theatre’s Lend Me a Tenor is great fun for the whole family. Bring your mom, your aunt, your kids, your grandma. You’ll be bringing laughter to the whole lot of them. Again, a ten for Lend Me a Tenor.
