The Treehouse Troupe, at The Treehouse Children’s Museum in Ogden, Utah, is a group of actors that present favorite fairy and folk tales on stage and are playing The Snake Prince until January 26th.  Their productions are geared for children but are equally as entertaining for the adults who accompany them. I attended The Snake Prince with my six-year-old niece, and we give it two enthusiastic thumbs up.  The Snake Prince is an Indian fairy tale of a young prince who is transformed into a snake, a necklace, and back to a baby, although he remains under the cursed magic spell until true love can break it.  The play was adapted and directed by Wesley Whitby.

Upon entering the theater, audience members are greeted by the four troupe members playing some traditional Indian instruments.  They explain to the audience what each instrument is and give a brief overview of Indian folklore.  They also explain a few brief theater etiquette rules, teaching the children, and sometimes adults, the appropriate way to behave.  The play is short, just about an hour, and it is both entertaining and engaging and a great way to introduce children to not only lesser known tales but also to the wonderful world of theater.

Each of the actors: Whitby, Mitchell Aardema, Natali Gonzales, and Corie Sorenson, play multiple roles and successfully execute each character.  They use simple costume changes to help effectively switch characters.  The story is easily followed and even though the actors are few and the characters many, each one of the actors excel at developing each character they portray.  One technique I particularly enjoyed is occasionally the actors would address the audience and engage them in the storytelling.  The troupe uses three puppets designed by Whitby to assist them.  The queen snake is especially impressive.  Whitby also designed a simple yet impressive set that is immediately recognizable as an Indian palace.  The costumes are beautiful traditional Indian wear.

When the production is complete, the troupe comes out on the stage and does a question and answer session with the audience.  The evening I attended, the questions were mainly asked by the children and were very insightful.  I loved that the troupe explained the backstage magic and explained how things worked.
