When you produce a play, Pinkalicious the Musical, based on a little girl’s obsession with the color pink, you may as well run with it! And at the Salt Lake Acting Company, they do just that. Their doors open to a festively pink lobby, complete with Pinkalicous books to purchase, and pink cupcake cookie concessions (as well as other options for those whose palates are a little more colorfully diverse). I brought two of my kids – ages seven and five. They were delighted with the theater and happily declared that our seats ‘had the very best view!’ Truthfully, there isn’t a bad seat in the house, and there is even mat seating provided on the floor of the stage, for those kids who want a fully immersive experience.
As a parent, it isn’t always easy to bring your kids to a theater production. Often, there are age restrictions put on the audience, or subject matter requires a more mature mindset. So, the younger generation is somewhat left out of the wonderful magic of the stage. Even before the show began, I thoroughly enjoyed SLAC’s approach to not only putting on a production designed to entertain a young audience (one hour – no intermission–perfect!), but they took the time before the show to engage the kids, and to give them a good understanding of what to expect from a live show in a fun and interactive way.
The cast of Pinkalicious the Musical is small – only five actors fill the roles – and they are kept constantly busy. Their energy is high and contagious throughout each music and dance number. Fiona Hannan brings a fun, youthful feeling to the lead character of Pinkalicous. Shannon Musgrave and Alexis Baigue primarily portray Mrs. and Mr. Pinkerton making my kids laugh each time they appeared as a dancing cupcake, bumble bee, or butterfly. Seth Foster manages a perfect little brother as Peter (who…spoiler alert…also loves pink!). Micki Martinez finishes off the cast playing best friend Alison, and the tap-dancing Dr. Wink.
The show is fun and engaging, full of fast-and-complete costume changes (Shannon Mccullock), a set that looks straight out of a story book (something I found out at the end, Set Designer Gage Williams literally did!), and lighting (Jesse Portillo) that brought wonder to the young audience. The pace of the show is quick and energetic – my five-year-old got to the theater telling me that he was going to take a nap during the show because he was just so tired. Guess what never happened?
Director Penelope Caywood has paid wonderful attention to how to entertain young children, while still giving them a dose of some good theater, as well as making it a pleasurable experience for the adults accompanying them. The program includes a delightful exchange between her and her daughter discussing her vision and experiences pulling the show together. I again found myself happy to find a theater so willing to allow children to take part. The actors even took time at the end of the production to allow the kids to ask questions, such as, “How did you change so fast?” And, “What are those other houses for?”
