Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban In Concert is a family friendly way to enjoy the Utah Symphony in Salt Lake City. Seasoned symphony-goers and newcomers alike will enjoy as they are transported to the wizarding world of Hogwarts to relive the magic of Harry Potter. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban first premiered in 2004 and is the third installment in the film series, coinciding with the Utah Symphony’s previous concerts of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in December of 2016 and 2017. Being a huge Harry Potter fan myself, I was beyond thrilled to watch the score performed live as the movie played on a projector screen above.

Lead by Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Rupert Grint as Ron, and Emma Watson as Hermione, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a tonal shift from the first more whimsical films in the series. Focusing on darker themes, audiences can expect to be wowed by such creatures as werewolves, the grimm, and the always terrifying dementors. Though the film is rated PG so parents can feel comfortable taking children to see the show.

Led by conductor Justin Freer, the Utah Symphony is an absolute thrill to both watch and listen to. In my opinion, the best part of the symphony was the choir. Watching Freer lead the Utah Symphony singers on stage and Warwick Davis lead the Hogwarts frog choir on screen was very funny and I couldn’t stop myself from smiling. Each crash of cymbals and blare of trumpet was spot on and made for a spectacular listening experience. The audience around me applauded and roared at the familiarity of the exciting John Williams score.

Grab your broomsticks and be sure not to miss this entertaining symphony experience, the Utah Symphony presents Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban In Concert with music by John Williams.

Note: Upcoming features in this series at Utah Symphony are Casablanca in March, Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert in May, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire™ in June.
