Light Up Christmas put on by the Utah Valley Symphony at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo, Utah is a favorite holiday tradition put on near the beginning of the holiday season each year. It is the perfect concert to get you into the holiday spirit with familiar carols, story-telling, and the classic audience participation in singing Silent Night.  The Covey Theatre is on Provo Center Street making navigation incredibly easy; there is some parking in front of the theatre along the roadside as well as ample parking behind the arts center on 100 South.

This year the Utah Valley Symphony, conducted by Bryce Rytting, has invited Dallyn Vail Bayles, Mindy Smoot Robins, Marvin Payne, and Shayla Osborn Beck to perform with them. The show is a mixture of varying solos and duets by these performers accompanied by the symphony or a pianist as well as pieces exclusively for the symphony arranged by Emmy-award-winning and Grammy-nominated composer Kurt Bestor. Throughout the show there are numbers of varying familiarity, each given a special touch by the performers.

Bayles and Robins have multiple numbers together, many of which can be found on their joint album O Holy Night. The talent each brings to the partnership magnifies the other beautifully. Payne has one of those voices that is soothing, the kind you want to hear tell stories all day; his reading of the 200th anniversary of “Silent Night” truly paints the picture of that December day adding a softer reverence to the performance. The vocals of Beck are truly amazing, she shines in her performance of “Go Tell it on the Mountain.

The Utah Symphony, conducted by Rytting, is all we could want–beautiful music filled with power, delight, and beauty.

Special shout out to lighting designer Pam Davis , as well. Often such things as lighting may go without specific notice from audience members. However, Davis’ designs and projections are impossible to miss, they truly help set the scene and feel of winter.

Light Up Christmas with the Utah Valley Symphony at the Covey Center for the Arts is wonderful and that will put you in the proper Christmas spirit with the true meaning of Christmas at the forefront. There are moments to laugh, marvel, ponder, and sing making the entire event an opportunity one doesn’t want to miss.
